i just ordered pro tools 8, but right now im using garage band on my MAC.  using the mic mojave MA200, MAC, and either of that DAW....what is the best interface or mic pre amp to push my mojave?  im just recording vocals, nothing looking into the

Universal Audio 710 Twin-Finity Single Channel Tube and Solid State Mic Preamp and DI

but dont know if i need both this and an interface, or sumthing different or wat...can any1 help with suggestions?

  • The Universal Audio 710 Twin-Finity is a great preamp and would allow you to dial in a large range of different tones from you microphone. Good choice.

Subjective questions like this containing the text: "what's the best" usually don't get you anywhere.  This comes up all the time from new engineers and the answer is always: it depends.

There are no black and white answers in audio engineering only shades of grey. Most any mic preamp you put with that microphone is going to sound good. Typically the more money you spend, the better results you will get...So long as you spend time learning proper micing techniques and you put a good sound source in front of the microphone.  (Bad singer = bad recording)

You should take a little bit of time to fill out your studio profile.  This will give other people an idea of what other equipment you are using and will help them give you a better more detailed answer.

Here is another question with a few preamp suggestions for your microphone

This is a very subjective issue, but having personally used the Mojave, I would suggest not using it with a tube pre-amp (since the mojave is tube, adding a tube pre makes the signal really thick and chunky and kind of muddy). I would go with something a little cleaner and less colored like a Grace m101, Daking Mic Pre 1, or a 500 series module. These models will give you some great versatility with that mic (useable with voice, guitar, and other instruments). I would find a good high-end retailer that is willing to let you try some preamps out with your mic and voice to find what sounds best to you.

I don't think that I should advertise my favorite dealers here, but feel free to email me at and I'll give you some contacts.

The other thing to make sure of, is that you don't go below $500 per channel on the pre. That is the price break between professional and prosumer.

    Presonus Eureka-prosumer

    Grace m101-professional

If you are going to go prosumer, you might as well stick with the pres on your interface.

I have used the Mojave MA200 for 3 years.  Initially I used the Aphex 230 voice channel strip with it, now I use the Avalon M5 preamp.  It's a beautiful combo.  I also utilize the Urei 1176LN for a touch of compression.
