I'd like to hear every ones thoughts on this scenario.

  • I can either get a Focusrite Liquid 56 and save cash for other things in the studio (microphones, instruments)
  • or, I can get 4-8 nice microphone preamps.  (API's or Neve).

From what I have read, the new liquid pres really are quite nice.  While they will most likely never be that same as the real thing, but the unit does give you the choice of 10 different preamps. (from neutral, to colored).  That's a lot more options that you're going to get in any other setup. Where else can I be spending my money to get a sonic upgrade beside the microphone preamps?  Microphones?  Converters? What do you think?

there is no "neutral" sounding preamp in this wonderful world. they are all colored

    • I do suppose you are right. I suppose I am using the world 'colored' to describe those preamps that have a tendancy to substantially change the incoming source.
