Reamp. Is it Necessary?

Want to re-record some guitar tracks with a different tone using a mic'd amp.  Guitar tone was recorded originally line in.   Someone told me you need to use a product called Reamp in between the daw line out and the guitar amp.   From what I can tell reamp just changes the impedance from lo to hi and has a trim control on it.

Reamp is over 200 dollars, not hugely expensive when it comes to gear but I feel it is overpriced in comparison to what it does.  Will I be able to do this with a simple ten dollar transformer instead or does reamp do something special?

You are going to need a device to match the impedance levels between the DAW and the guitar amplifier no matter what.

I think you might be able to use a passive direct box in reverse but I don't think that will work with all direct boxes.

A cheaper and possibly more versatile alternative is to instead use an amplifier emulation software like Amplitude or Guitar Rig.  This way you don't have to worry about impedance matching because it's all digital.
