Say you spend 2K on a nice computer...that leaves you with another 8k to spend.   Let's also assume that you do not need to spend any money on studio construction.

    • I would start with an excellent and flexible audio interface like the RME Fireface 800 -- top of the live sounds and all kinds of inputs and outputs.
    • Then get yourself a really nice single channel strip like the Universal Audio LA-610 MKII -- this as an awesome mic preamp, killer EQ, and an LA-2A type compressor all built in.  (instant killer vocals)
    • Get yourself an external 8 mic pre rack so you have enough channels to record with.  Anything with ADAT out will work...Octopre MKII, SP828
    • Now a decent mic collection. Check out some of these mics: Avantone CV-12, Rode NT1A, Shure SM81, MD421, Ribbon Mic
    • Monitors -- check out the Dynaudio BM6A MKII
    • Don't forget cables.  Check out Lava Cable for all kinds of custom affordable cable.

keep in mind that when your buying software you buy the one you are most comfortable with.  If you are new to software all together then some of the best out there are Ableton, Logic Pro, Cubase, Pro Tools, etc.  The reason I'm bringing this up is that these software programs do not come cheap, so make sure you are buying the one you think you can learn to use, or maybe have a friend that already knows their way around one and can help teach you.  You don't want to spend 600 on ableton then realize you like Logic better and then have to dish out another 400...

For having 12k to spend on a studio, you sure are going low-end.  I would get a much better setup if I had that kind of scratch lying around.

Ditch the Apple monitor in favor of a $200 24" from Dell -- that gives you another $600 to spend.  Both do the exact same thing, and neither of them make your music sound any better.

    • ok thanks man i thought of that to ealier today what would you get for 12k if you were to build your home studio from scratch including the computer

A Raindirk of some kind is the absolute best board for this kind of budget. I would go mac pro and logic...you'll need converters.  How many channels will you need?  Are you planning on recording full drum kits?
