ok guys i really appreciate your help but i realize i need to do alot solo...my last question is, what book or "how to" can i buy or order that explains everything when it comes to editing and using plug ins, and EQ/compressor and all that fun stuff.

I need a big book just explaining how to use it all and what it all does.  Again, all i do is record vocals but i havnt had alot of experience with editing to make the quality and vocals sound perfected.  There is a "joseph beth" book store down the road.  What book can i buy and read to learn everything there needs to learn about recording vocals and editing vocal tools and perfecting the sound and tools?

I'm a self-taught engineer and I did most of my learning online, in the studio, and with magazines.  I can't say that I've really read any books on the subject. Everything you need you should be able to find online.

Take a little break from recording and spend the next few days doing nothing but reading about different topics.  Start putting "How does a ___ work" and "what is ____" in to Google.

Make sure you know how to use your gear!  Read the manuals for all your gear and lookup anything you don't understand online.

You need to look into topics that include:

    • Know exactly what everything in you signal chain does (microphone, cable, interface, mic preamp, DAC)
    • Know what sample rates and bit depth are.
    • Investigate vocal technique and vocal recording techniques.
    • How does compression work, compression on vocal tracks
    • How does EQ work. (Mix Master had a good post about parametric EQs.)

Make sure you learn to use a real multi-track recording program. (Cubase, Sonar, Pro-Tools, Samplitude, etc...)  DAWs like Audacity are nice to play around with but will not allow you do do much serious work.  It's worth it to put the time in and learn something more advanced.

    • Very good points Justin. Also, I'd suggest that since Zach seems to be a very hands on kinda guy, perhaps some of the training videos that are available might be useful. My favorite are the Multi-Platinum series. multi-platinum.com - The DVD's come with sample sessions you can follow along with. At $30 for the downloaded version, it's not a bad investment.

    • I haven't used any video training and I forgot about that option. Good idea @kylepsnyder

    • Thanks Justin! The Multi-Platinum series are very good, as is Groove3. However, the "Secrets of the Pro's" that you'll see floating around are not something that I would recommend, even for a beginner.

One of the wonderful things about Youtube is the tutorials it has spawned. Like with all things on the web, you have to take everything with a grain of salt, but there always seems to be one fanatic who has taken the time to show how he does something - and it really helps you. I am so often impressed with some of the talent at the same time. I just did that with Autotune trying to find out what I am missing in that I don't seem to get much in the way of results with it. I now know how to sing like Cher and totally screw up a rap song .... lol .... but I still learned a lot from going through it I also just Google the name of what I am looking for, whether it be a skill, question or a product. For example, search "mic technique " or add the word tutorial to any search in Google and Youtube and browse the many answers.
